Roland Wagstaff, bass guitar/guitar teacher, Leith, Edinburgh, Scotland (UK)

Hi, I'm Roland Wagstaff. I've been teaching music to private students in the Edinburgh area since 1998, but I've been playing since the early 1980s. I hold a Higher National Diploma in Modern Musicianship and an Enhanced Disclosure certificate. As well as teaching, I also perform and record with rock bands and function bands.

The main instruments I teach are electric bass and guitar, encompassing most popular styles from rock, metal and punk to folk, jazz and funk. Whether you're a beginner or a more experienced player looking to take your skills to the next level, I tailor my lesson-plans to each individual student so you'll get the most out of my one-to-one classes and quickly begin to realise your musical potential.

"Roland took me from complete novice to playing bass in my band
in a very short space of time."
- Ian Allan

I also teach music theory, either as a stand-alone course or within the context of instrument tuition. Many rock musicians feel alienated and confused by the abstract way that music theory is often taught, so I aim to de-mistify the concepts and show how a little bit of music theory can go a long way in helping you master your instrument. I call this approach Applied Rock Theory or A.R.T for short.

I specialise in tutoring school and college students as they prepare for music exams. Whether you're studying Standard Grade, Int I, Int II or Higher I can help you maximise your marks in both the performance and listening exams.

My lessons are priced at 25 for an hour or 20 for 45 minutes. Your first lesson is absolutely free! If you then decide to proceed the normal schedule is one lesson per week. I usually teach at my home in Leith but can arrange to come to you if that is more convenient. I want to help you become a great musician, but remember, that can only come with plenty of practise.

"Getting in touch with Roland was the best thing I ever did
in terms of advancing my playing and my knowledge of the bass."
- Alan Milbourne
